What commercial auto covers
Commercial auto covers vehicles your business owns or uses for work. Like a personal policy, it can include liability, collision, comprehensive and uninsured motorist coverage. The difference is that it is built for business use, higher limits and employees driving.
Who needs it
You likely need commercial auto if any of these apply:
- The vehicle is titled to your business
- Employees drive it
- You carry tools, equipment or goods for pay
- You make deliveries or transport customers
- A contract asks for higher liability limits than a personal policy offers
Personal auto policies often exclude business use. Finding that out after a crash is the expensive way to learn it.
Vans, pickups and box trucks versus semi trucks
This page is about everyday work vehicles. If you run tractor-trailers or haul freight for hire, you need trucking insurance, which has its own federal requirements. We handle both and will point you to the right one.
What affects your price
- The vehicles and how they are used
- Who drives them and their records
- How far you travel and where you park
- The limits and deductibles you choose
A quote is not coverage. Coverage begins only when confirmed in writing by the insurance company. Availability and pricing depend on the carrier and your situation.
Questions
I use my own car for work sometimes. Am I covered?
It depends on your policy and what you do. Driving to one office is usually fine. Deliveries and client transport often are not. Ask us to check.
Can I insure several vehicles on one policy?
Yes. Once you have a few, a fleet policy can be simpler than separate ones.
Are my tools in the truck covered?
Not automatically. Tools and equipment usually need their own coverage.
Do I need it if my employees drive their own cars for work?
Your business can still be held responsible. Ask us about hired and non-owned auto coverage.
