What home insurance covers
The house
Repairing or rebuilding the structure after a covered loss.
Your belongings
Furniture, clothing, electronics and other personal property.
Liability
If someone is hurt on your property and you are responsible.
Living costs
A place to stay if a covered loss forces you to move out for a while.
What Colorado homeowners should check
- Hail and wind. The Front Range sees frequent hail. Many policies carry a separate wind and hail deductible, often a percentage of the home’s insured value and not a flat dollar amount. Know yours before a storm.
- Wildfire. If you live near open space or the foothills, ask how wildfire risk affects your options.
- Flood. Standard home policies do not cover flood. That is a separate policy.
- Roof. Some policies pay less for older roofs. Ask how yours is valued.
Who needs it
Colorado law does not require home insurance, but your mortgage lender will. Even without a loan, it is the only thing standing between you and the full cost of rebuilding.
What affects your price
- The age, size and construction of the home
- The roof’s age and material
- Your location and claims history
- The coverage amounts and deductibles you choose
A quote is not coverage. Coverage begins only when confirmed in writing by the insurance company. Availability and pricing depend on the carrier and your situation.
Questions
How much coverage do I need?
Enough to rebuild the house at today’s construction costs, which is not the same as its market price. We help you work out the figure.
Can I save by insuring my car with the same company?
Often yes. Ask us to quote home and auto together.
Does it cover my home business?
Usually only in a very limited way. Tell us if you run a business from home.
I am buying a house. When should I call?
As soon as you are under contract. Your lender will need proof of insurance before closing.
